Netherlands Gambling Authority chair reminds sector of new powers
With the entry into force of the Remote Gambling Act, the Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) has been given new powers to stop illegal gambling, the regulator's chair René Jansen wrote in a personal blog post.
Among other things, these new powers allow the Netherlands Gambling Authority to order payment providers to cease offering their services to unlicensed gambling operators. Also, the Dutch regulator may henceforth order providers of "public electronic communication services," i.e. social media, to stop facilitating unlicensed gambling offerings and to block or remove gambling advertising that violates applicable marketing rules.
KSA inspectors will also be allowed to assume false identities online in order to reveal any criminal practices through “mystery shopping.” Additionally, KSA inspectors can be empowered to conduct home searches and seize objects.
In related news, the Dutch regulator has claimed a €10,000 penalty payment from Nederlandse Loterij-owned Lotto over the operator’s repeated failure to adhere to advertising standards.
