Betsson to Cut 160 Staff

Betsson has announced that the company is undertaking a corporate restructuring and streamlining process that will see the company shed over 160 jobs, with 130 of those being in Malta.

The cost saving of the changes is estimated to SEK 50-60 million (€5-6 million) annually.

According to the Times of Malta, the move is at least partly a repudiation of Betsson’s aggressive acquisition strategy under former CEO Ulrik Bengtsson.

“When you buy companies, you acquire platforms, assets and tools but also the people and the culture – which you then need to integrate into Betsson. When you buy a lot of companies, you will see overlaps of roles and duplications. We are now trying to streamline and make it very clear who is responsible for what across the whole organization,” Betsson’s current CEO Jesper Svensson said.

“We will put more focus on organic growth, which will make us stronger,” Svensson added.

UK Gambling Commission Proposes Stricter Advertising Rules, Warns of “Declining Trust”

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has opened a public consultation on proposed changes to regulations relating to marketing and advertising, unfair terms, and complaints and disputes.

“We are proposing these changes because of the risk of consumer harm, concern about lack of compliance with consumer protection legislation, declining public trust in gambling and concerns about advertising,” Sarah Gardner, Commission Executive Director said.

According to the UKGC’s proposals, UK gambling operators could face stiff financial penalties for breaching advertising rules.

These latest proposals are indicative of an increasingly harsh regulatory environment in the UK.

GVC Capital to Consider Public Listing for Sky Bet

Sky Bet’s majority owner CVC has hired investment bank Rothschild to examine a stock market listing of the British firm, Reuters reported yesterday. The firm could be valued at between £2.5bn and £3bn.

An expected clampdown on gambling machines in British betting shops could make Sky Bet, which is online-only, relatively more attractive to investors, according to Reuters.

Sky Bet was valued at around £800m when CVC bought its majority stake in 2014.
