“The Netherlands Gaming Authority has never tolerated illegal online gambling,” the regulator’s CEO Marja Appelman emphatically stressed in a recent interview.
While it certainly appears that the Gaming Authority has previously tolerated operators that promised to follow certain regulatory guidelines, the regulator officially claims it has merely assigned these operators a low enforcement priority. The validity of this distinction will partly determine, in a pending court case, whether the regulator will be found to have been justified in recently having “tightened” (as opposed to “changed”) its enforcement policy.
