Due to the stricter enforcement policy of the Netherlands Gaming Authority, which was announced on Saturday and comes into force today, several Netherlands-facing online casinos, such as Klavercasino, FortuinCasino and PolderCasino, have already decided to (temporarily) shut down, so as to not endanger their chances of acquiring a license once the regulated market opens.

Some Netherlands-facing operators have opted for a radical rebranding instead.

Other, internationally oriented operators have announced they will, for now, cease to accept players from the Netherlands.

Last year, Malta-based Betsson, owner of the Netherlands-facing Oranje Casino and Kroon Casino brands, threatened to disregard local regulations if the Dutch government would fail to quickly regulate online gaming. “According to the European Commission, online gaming is, generally speaking, legal in the EU. Foreign operators can only be refused market access under strict conditions,” Betsson CEO Ulrik Bengtsson said.

At this point, it is not yet clear if some operators would choose to lock horns with the Netherlands Gaming Authority and attempt to force a market opening through the courts.

A player who missed out on the Dutch Postcode Lottery’s main prize due to insufficient funds in his bank account, has failed to convince a local court that he should have shared in his neighbors’ winnings.

UK bookmaker Sky Betting and Gaming has applied for a Malta Gaming Authority license ahead of the operator’s planned launch into Germany’s online sports betting market.

The German state of Hesse’s attempt to introduce a stopgap online sports betting licensing regime has, however, been struck down by a German court.
