UK Gambling Commission Publishes New Framework for Measuring Gambling Harms

The UK Gambling Commission has published a new framework for measuring gambling harms among children and young people.

The framework was designed to better understand the broad spectrum of harms from gambling that can impact the health, relationships and finances of young people.

Helen Rhodes, the Gambling Commission’s Programme Director for Safer Gambling said: “Gaining a better understanding of the impact of gambling on children and young people is a key priority for the Commission. […] This newly released framework will provide critical insight into the range of harms that young people in Britain can experience and will help greatly in concentrating the National Strategy’s prevention and education initiatives where they will have the most impact.”

Betsson Steps up Preparations for Dutch Market Opening

Online gambling operator Betsson reported a 10% year-on-year group revenue increase during Q1 2019, with revenues topping SEK1,330.6m (€124m).

Betsson CEO Pontus Lindwall told investors that the newly-regulated Swedish market had gotten off to “a challenging start” and the new regulation had negatively impacted both revenue and operating profit during the first quarter.

Lindvall also said that Betsson continues to prepare for the opening of the Dutch regulated online market, which the operator expects for Q1 2021:

“The adoption of the Remote Gambling Bill in the Netherlands in February was a positive milestone. It is a step forward for the Dutch market and consumers, as well as a positive   development towards locally regulated revenues for Betsson. The operational subsidiaries have taken swift measures to be in the best position to obtain a license at the earliest possible time. The measures include adjustments to the product offering, rebranding and payment solutions. Whilst we have short term negative impact on revenues in the Netherlands, the measures ensure a sustainable outlook for the Dutch business and are long-term investments.”

Betsson’s Netherlands-facing subsidiaries Kroon Casino and Oranje Casino recently rebranded to Casino Winner and Loyal Casino, respectively, as unlicensed operators with a Dutch domain name will face a two-year cooling off period before being eligible for a remote license.

However, Betsson’s Netherlands-facing brands may have waited just a bit too long with their rebranding to be immediately eligible for a license when the Dutch regulated market opens.

 

Other News

According to the Netherlands only licensed sports betting operator, De Toto, AFC Ajax has an almost 80% (1,27) chance to qualify for the UEFA Champions League final tonight.

 

The German government has submitted the amended Interstate Treaty on Gambling (IST) to the European Commission for approval.

 

Italy’s telecom watchdog AGCOM published the country’s new gambling advertising restrictions.

 

Swedish trade association Branschföreningen för Onlinespel (BOS), has reported Svenska Spel to the Swedish Broadcasting Commission over the company’s ads in pre-financed television programs.

 

William Hill has launched its brand in the Swedish iGaming market, rolling out a Kambi-powered sportsbook and a range of casino games under the WilliamHill.se domain.

 

Gaming Innovation Group (GiG) reported a 13% year-on-year drop in its Q1 2019 revenues, which fell to €32.4m (£27.7m), citing the impact of Swedish regulation on its revenues.

 

Gambling firms are not doing enough to promote safe betting on Twitter amid the “sheer scale” of their marketing, according to researchers from Northumbria University.

 

The GambleAware charity revealed that its voluntary contributions from UK gambling operators over the 12 months ending March 31 fell below its £10m target and well below the 0.1% share of gambling revenue that operators are supposed to remit.

 

UK-listed gambling operator Paddy Power Betfair (PPB) reported double-digit growth in Q1, although the gains largely came from the company’s recent acquisitions.

 

LeoVegas has reported a 12% year-on-year rise in Q1 revenue to €86.3m ($96.5m), despite a considerable fall in EBITDA.

 

According to its Q1 2019 trading update, Catena Media recorded a revenue increase of 9% to €26 million. Despite growth, the figure is “below the expectations” of Catena governance.

US casino giant Caesars Entertainment has reported a 7.6% increse in revenue for the first quarter of 2019, though finance-related costs saw the operator’s loss for the period increase to $218m (€193.5m).
