Responsible Gambling and AI – a Quick-Fix Solution?

In order to be effective in detecting early signs of problem gambling, AI must be supported by the knowledge and experience of responsible gambling experts, says Kim Mouridsen, Professor at Aarhus University and founder of Mindway AI.

Too often, AI is simply used to search for patterns, rather than to develop a search target that is truly prognostic of pathological gambling. If the AI’s algorithms receive no directed input (or “training”) informed by responsible gambling expertise, “what you get is a fancy way of organizing data and that’s it.”

While AI can be successful in identifying (future) problem gamblers, it takes expert knowledge on what characterizes problem gamblers for AI to be an effective tool. “The algorithm is only as intelligent as the brains behind it,” Mouridsen concludes.

Kim Mouridsen will also speak at the upcoming Gaming in Holland Conference.

The rebranding of Kroon Casino and Oranje Casino is the result of a motion adopted by the Dutch Senate, stating that online operators who actively targeted the Dutch market in the past (for instance by making use of a Dutch domain name) will be subject to a two-year “cooling off” period during which they will not be eligible for a remote license.

Last year, the Netherlands Gambling Authority issued a €300k fine to Betsson’s Netherlands-facing subsidiary Corona, operator of the Oranje and Kroon online casino brands, for offering online gaming to customers in the country without a license.
