Fewer Operators than Expected to Enter the Dutch Online Market?
Regulatory changes are forcing operators to become more selective in their international strategy, EGR Intel writes. This could mean that fewer international operators than expected will decide to enter the Dutch online market:
“Some regulated markets such as Portugal, France and Poland are setting tax rates at such a punitive level that only those with a strong track record or local partner are willing to get involved. While others such as Spain or potentially the Netherlands are at a biting point where operators can only get involved if it’s a real market of focus.
If you are of the scale of bet365 or PPB then perhaps you can afford for every market to be one of focus, but for everyone else in the market it’s now time to be selective about where you apply your marketing and investment budget. This has been the case for some years now, but the last 12 months has brought this new reality into sharp focus.
The emergence of more must-enter regulated markets in the mid-term from Germany and Sweden will likely only squeeze out some of the smaller markets such as Portugal, Spain and even the Netherlands as options for some. While the increasingly complex and tricky dot.com sector will likely see more regionally or even country specific focused operations emerge.”

Lower House to Vote on Privatization of Holland Casino on January 31
On Monday afternoon, the permanent committees of Security and Justice and Finance of the Dutch Lower House debated the proposal to privatize Holland Casino. Although a majority of the Lower House is in favor, there is opposition as well.
The Christian Democrats (CDA) in particular have proposed a number of amendments to the original bill that would impose additional restrictions. MP’s Jeroen van Wijngaarden (VVD) and Mei Li Vos (PvdA) have proposed an amendment that would ensure that the private party that will buy the majority of Holland Casino’s branches, will not be able to acquire the remaining casino licenses as well.
Dutch labor union FNV is already suing Holland Casino in order to preserve its employees’ job security.
The full Lower House will reportedly vote on the bill on January 31.
In related news, State Secretary Klaas Dijkhoff responded to questions submitted by MP Mei Li Vos (PvdA) regarding a promotional game of chance offered by Holland Casino.
